“Mathematics is the most beautiful and most powerful creation of the human society”In view of the increasing importance of Mathematics in the 21st century, Dr. Homi Bhabha State University (HBSU) has initiated a series of programs seeking to convey the excitement of mathematics to students and teachers.As a part of these activities, the Department of Mathematics organizes “National Mathematics Day” every year. This year National Mathematics Day (SIGMATICS 2023) was organised at HBSU, Mumbai on Wednesday, 01 February,2023.Five students of class 9, Nupur Shinde, Monushree Das, Shriya Kotian, Neharika Rane, Yogini Bhagat have witnessed the exciting full day program from 9 am to 4 pm.The program has started at 10 am in a traditional way by lighting of lamp by Dr. Jairam M. Khobragade, Director, HBSU, Dr. Yuvraj Malghe, Hon. Registrar, HBSU and Dr. Selby Jose Professor & Head. Department of Mathematics, HBSU.

All dignitaries welcomed the gathering and put emphasis on promoting mathematics among school students.Dr. Selby Jose addressed the students with his impressive speech saying the cornerstone of becoming a successful learner at any age comes down to the four C’s: Critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication. Most of the students don’t fully grasp the idea of a math topic when they see it, projects are a hands-on learning experience for them. With this vision each school got the opportunity to visit twelve innovative and unique mathematics projects namely Disney World, Dum Charades, Gamble’s Destiny, Math Sticks, The Josephus Problem, Musical Math, Bar Code and QR Code response, Magical Cube, Mathemagica, Cryptography, Spherical Geometry and Origami Design. These interesting projects will definitely enhance analytical skills in students and helps them to explore more about the numbers.For improving problem solving and deductive reasoning skills, the department of mathematics, HBSU has organised fascinating Interschool Mathematics quiz and Sudoku competition. Monushree Das, Shriya Kotian represented Auxilium Convent High, Wadala for a quiz competition and Nupur Shinde, Neharika Rane, Yogini Bhagat for Sudoku. Our brilliant students have made us proud by bagging second position in Quiz Competition. The winners were awarded with medals and certificates. All the participants were honoured with the participation certificates and the program was concluded by vote of thanks.We sincerely thank ,The Department of Mathematics, HBSU who worked diligently to give its best to students. They don’t just give students an education and experiences that set them up for success in a career but help them succeed in their career—to discover a field they’re passionate about and dare to lead it.Also Heartfelt thanks to our dynamic principal Sr. Gloria Ferrao for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this outreach program who also understands well that this hands-on experience will definitely help the students to decide their passion and inclination so as to serve the country better. Afterall..“Life is a math equation, in order to gain the most, you have know how to convert negatives into positives.”
