Day 23  Passion Sunday – Commemoration of  St. Mary Mazzarello

(Sr. Santana Pereira)We surely want to deepen our eco-spirituality and we will do it today, reflecting on the life of  our Foundress, an Icon of Eco—Spirituality.

Eco-Spirituality is seeing the Divine in everything “for in Him all things were created in heaven, on earth and under the earth”. We see the Divine present in the ant, in the flowers, in the elephant, in humans.

Ecological spirituality makes us people of contemplation, of depth, of inclusion, compassion and empathy, persons of sound values.

Eco-spirtuality makes us ONE WITH THE DIVINE –“I DID NOT THINK OF God for 15 minutes” was the sin that Maria Mazzarello confessed. It shows that Maria was contemplating God when she worked with the vines, joyfully praising the Creator, singing her love songs to Him. She saw Jesus present in the vine and speaking to her: ‘I am the Vine and you are the    branches. Abide in me and I in you.” (Jn 15: 4a, 5)

Maria’s heart was totally immersed in God “O Jesus, I am truly yours”. Maria Mazzarello worked with the soil, spoke to the vines, touched their leaves, admired their fruit, watered the vines. She contemplated her Real Vine ‘Jesus’.

Everything in Nature spoke to her of God. She felt sorry when she cut the tender vines hurriedly. Like Nature she too became compassionate and self – giving. She was kind; spoke lovingly to her father and the workers in the vineyard. May we too like her be protectors and healers of the Earth!
