AMAR # 440 Summer Fun at Kune
Sr. Carol Nunes and Sr. Vaneeta Khristi.
On 17 April 2018 , Ashish Bhavan Kune echoed with laughter and shouts of joy as 35 enthusiastic kids gathered together for the much awaited summer camp of fifteen days packed with games, fun and learning. We commenced with a brief yet solemn prayer moment by Sr. Carol Nunes, inviting the Lord to bless us and the days ahead. After an ice breaker Sr. Vaneeta Christi divided the children in groups of four giving each the name of a colour they preferred.
To set the ball rolling, we taught them some action songs and conducted a few games. After a paper basket craft activity and distribution of snacks it was time to wind up.
Each day began with an action song. The children enjoyed as they danced, clapped and sang. This was followed by telegames. The hall resounded with screams, cheers and shrieks of excitement as they yelled their lungs out to vie with each other for the first place. The tiny tots weren’t silent spectators. They too zealously joined in the games to outdo their counterparts. The scores kept fluctuating with each game and activity. Today’s winners would be the next day’s losers. This added to their performance.
They were taught to make bags, baskets, flowers, pencil stands, wall hangings and chimes out of paper. They folded, cut and glued together patiently and with much interest. Competitions such as drawing, singing, dancing, colouring, mehendi, and tattoo were conducted for them. They participated with much enthusiasm and creativity as they busied themselves with colour. We ended each day with a documentary film of about ten to fifteen minutes on various social issues followed by a brief discussion and a ‘good ‘ thought.
To beat the summer heat we organized water games for them. They were thrilled as they played one game after the other for nearly two hours and asked for more. Wet and hungry, they were treated to a sumptuous meal- chicken biryani and jalebis sponsored by Fr. Peter Rodrigues. After lunch they danced like crazy in the water. The rain dance was the icing of the cake.
A special thanks to Sr. Jyoti Pinto and the postulants who came for a couple of days to help conduct games and craft activities for the kids.
Every day had a surprise in store for them; something new to look forward to and so one or two added to the numbers. They eagerly awaited every activity- be it games or craft. We concluded our summer camp with a picnic and an entertainment programme along with the distribution of prizes.
