AMAR # 1590 Science Day celebrations at Auxilium Lonavla

Annually, on the 28th of February, India celebrates National Science day in honour of the great Indian Physicist, C.V. Raman who invented the Raman Effect which explains the change in the wavelength of light that occurs when a light beam is deflected by molecules. The theme of this year’s Science Day was “Integrated approach in science and technology for a sustainable future”. This year, given the situation of the pandemic, this remarkable day would be celebrated in different parts of India, instead of a single venue as otherwise. To mark this day, the staff and students of Auxilium Lonavla prepared a science- filled programme in school.

To begin the day, during the assembly, the children used many science concepts which we see everyday but take for granted and explained the science behind it, in simple words to the school. This included the concept of Gravity which pulls things to the Earth, by Isaac Newton, the scattering effect (Raman Effect), and Archimedes Principle which displaces the same amount of liquid as the mass of the object inserted in it. The children also staged a creative skit on the life of C.V. Raman, displaying the talented Raman’s love for science from a very young age and his zeal to make a difference in the field of Science in his own motherland, India, despite the opportunity to be able to pursue his studies abroad. The lives of some scientists including Vikram Sarabhai and A.P.J Abdul Kalam were also highlighted through speeches. The peak of the event was the science quiz in which all participated enthusiastically.

After the morning programme, the children had a class-wise presentation of various science concepts and models and charts in the school corridors. The whole school really looked like a big science laboratory. In the afternoon, some of the children were involved in preparing Rangoli designs on various science concepts while others wrote beautiful essays on science related topics. The best entries were selected, but the efforts and the enthusiasm of all was appreciated.

May this Science Day bring about a greater curiosity in the young minds of future India to seek ways and means of bringing about a sustainable future for all in the world.
